Founded by Rabbi Jacob Pearlmutter, who was born in Poland and came to the U.S. at age 19 after World War I.
Originally called the Forest Park Hebrew Congregation at 3820 Garrison Boulevard, in November 1933.
In July, 1934, the congregation’s name was changed to Beth Yehuda Congregation, in memory of Yehuda Morris Barrash, a philanthropist and community leader.
The congregation moved to 3911 Garrison Blvd. at the intersection of Boarman Ave., which was dedicated August 26, 1934.
Groundbreaking for an attached Hebrew school and community center were held on June 15, 1947 and dedication was held in September 1948.
In October 1947, a merger was made of Beth Yehuda Congregation with Anshe Kurland Congregation (founded 1895) of North Exeter Street, to form the Beth Yehuda-Anshe Kurland Congregation.
In June 1957 a groundbreaking was held for a new synagogue on the same grounds at 3911 Garrison Blvd., and the old cottage was demolished.
Rabbi Pearlmutter made the decision to move the congregation to Randallstown, and began holding services in his new home at 8611 Lugano Road in 1966. Groundbreaking was held for a new synagogue at 8701 Winands Road on February 11, 1968. Services began at 8701 Winands Road during the High Holidays, 1968.
In 1970, Kneseth Israel (1902)-Anshe Kolk-Wolyn (1915) Congregation (merger 1956) merged into Beth Yehuda-Anshe Kurland, Winands Road Synagogue Center, after a failed merger with Tifereth Israel Anshe Sphard Congregation, which was to build a synagogue on Greenspring Avenue called the Greengate Congregation.
Rabbi Jacob Pearlmutter retired about 1973 after 40 years, and passed away in 1977. Rabbi Alan Ciner was hired before moving to Columbus, OH. Rabbi Ziggy Wolkenstein followed before Rabbi Sholom Salfer was hired in 1976. Rabbi Salfer remained rabbi until 2018. Samuel Stal was Cantor at Winands from 1971 until 2010.
Winands Road Synagogue Center merged with Beth Tfiloh in 2018 and local community members held final services at 8701 Winands Road on Memorial Day, 5/27/2019, marking the last congregational services in Randallstown, Maryland.
The Jewish Cemetery Association was approached by the Beth Yehuda Anshe Kurland Cemetery in 2019 in conjunction with the Beth Tfiloh merger. The cemetery is located at 6700 Bowleys Lane, Rosedale, MD 21237. The board unanimously approved the acquisition on March 17, 2019, and has been managing the cemetery since.
