Synagogue History:
Anshe Sphard was at 4 North Broadway, in Baltimore, from 1937-1951. Anshe Sphard (1887) merged with Ohr Knesseth Israel (1894) to form Ohr Knesseth Israel-Anshe Sphard Congregation, Rogers Avenue Synagogue. in 1950, effective in 1951. Rogers Ave. Synagogue merged with Beth Jacob Congregation (1938) in 1993. in 2007, a merger was made with Beth Tfiloh Congregation (1921).
When the Beth Tfiloh/Beth Jacob merger occurred in 2007, Beth Tfiloh approached the JCA about acquiring and operating the Ohr Knesseth Israel Anshe Sphard Cemetery. The JCA board met and unanimously voted to take over and manage the cemetery. This cemetery has been the target of vandalism over the years and we currently have plans to increase surveillance and security in the future to reduce the chance of this happening again.
